Early studies have shown that the risk of severe complications and mortality rates from COVID-19 are higher for certain vulnerable populations, particularly people who are elderly or have multiple chronic conditions. Unfortunately, people with the same chronic condition don’t always have the same risk, and simple rules can fail to capture complex factors like overall frailty.
To help more easily and accurately identify these at-risk populations, our portfolio company ClosedLoop.ai, the premier data science platform for healthcare, has developed a free, open-source tool organizations can use to identify the most vulnerable individuals and so help more effectively protect those individuals from becoming infected.
How it Works
Because data on COVID-19 cases is not yet readily available, the C-19 Index was developed using proxy events (e.g. pneumonia, influenza) and calculates vulnerability in terms of a person’s near-term risk of severe complications from respiratory infections.
With the C-19 Index, population health and care management organizations aim to lower the infection rate among their most vulnerable, helping to prevent healthcare workers, first responders, and other vital community resources from becoming overwhelmed.
“We can only protect people who are vulnerable if we can identify them, prioritize resources, and provide ways to help reduce their exposure,” said ClosedLoop CEO Andrew Eye. “The C-19 Index provides a way for healthcare organizations to target their outreach and interventions to the most vulnerable patients.”
Healthcare organizations and community health professionals can use the C-19 Index in several ways, including:
Identifying and targeting vulnerable individuals for outreach
Prioritizing g resources and services such as food delivery, virtual worship, medicine deliveries, telehealth, regular check-ins, etc.
Coordinating efforts with other organizations and agencies
How to Access the Index
You can access the C-19 Index through the ClosedLoop.ai website, on Google Cloud Marketplace, Amazon SageMaker, and via ClosedLoop’s HIPAA compliant hosted platform.
Additionally, ClosedLoop.ai has created a community forum for experts to further enhance and extend the index. Healthcare leaders and data scientists in population health, public health, and hospital systems are encouraged to join the discussion and find ways to leverage this service to reduce the impact of COVID-19 around the world.
